New Survey: 8 Out of 10 Swedes Drink Coffee

The coffee roastery Löfbergs has conducted an extensive survey of Swedish coffee habits. Among other findings, it reveals that 8 out of 10 Swedes drink coffee, with filter coffee being the clear favourite.

"The survey confirms that coffee is the national beverage in Sweden, where we consume more than 1,000 cups of coffee per person on average each year," says Anders Thorén, Head of Corporate Communications at Löfbergs.

Filter Coffee Remains Unchallenged as Favourite
Löfbergs' coffee report is a comprehensive study of Swedish coffee habits, answering questions such as how many Swedes drink coffee, what they prefer to drink, and when.

"We see, for instance, that filter coffee is the absolute favourite among Swedes. A full 73 per cent say it is their most common choice. Instant coffee, which ranks second, only accounts for 7 per cent," says Anders Thorén.

Looking at the type of coffee Swedes drink regularly, the figure for filter coffee is even higher – 87 per cent – far ahead of cappuccino and espresso at 21 per cent each.

Morning coffee holds special importance, with 69 per cent stating that it is the most important cup of the day. Mornings are also when most Swedes enjoy their first cup. 55 per cent have their first coffee before 8 a.m., and 95 per cent before noon.

Harder to Give Up Coffee Than Beer
The survey also shows that Swedes find it difficult to be without their coffee. When asked how hard it would be to quit drinking coffee, 57 per cent said it would be difficult or very difficult. This is significantly higher than for beer (20%) and soda (11%).

"This highlight just how deeply ingrained Swedish coffee culture is; the social benefits coffee provides are incredibly strong," says Anders Thorén.

Founded in 1906 in Karlstad, Sweden, Löfbergs is one of the largest family-owned coffee roasters in the Nordic region. The company began exporting coffee in 1993, and today, every second cup of Löfbergs coffee is sold outside of Sweden. Löfbergs operates its own subsidiaries in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the UK.
