Löfbergs Turns Coffee Waste into Sustainable Potting Soil

Using coffee grounds to enrich soil is a well-known trick among gardeners. Now, Sweden-based Löfbergs and Weibulls are taking it a step further with Coffee Soil – a completely peat-free potting mix made from upcycled coffee beans.

Since 2021, Löfbergs and Evergreen Garden Care (owner of Weibulls) have worked together to develop a circular solution for coffee waste. Instead of being discarded, coffee beans that don’t meet Löfbergs’ quality standards are composted and transformed into nutrient-rich soil. In 2024 alone, 106 tonnes of coffee waste were used to produce Coffee Soil.

“We have reduced our production waste to just 0.32%, and this project is a great example of how leftovers can be put to good use in a smart and circular way. We hope more coffee roasters will join us in minimising industry waste,” says Anders Thorén, Head of Corporate Communications at Löfbergs.

Peatlands store vast amounts of carbon, making peat extraction a significant environmental concern. Evergreen Garden Care is committed to finding sustainable alternatives, and coffee waste has proven to be an excellent replacement.

Coffee Soil is now available in selected retailers and online at www.weibulls.com.
