Kathrine Löfberg Appointed as New Chair of the initiative for coffee&climate

The Steering Committee of the initiative for coffee&climate (c&c) has appointed Kathrine Löfberg, Löfbergs, Sweden, as the new Chair. She follows Nanda Bergstein, Tchibo, Germany, while Mario Cerutti, Lavazza, Italy, continues as Vice Chair.

c&c is a pre-competitive partnership of coffee companies and public partners to support smallholder coffee farming families to respond effectively to the effects of climate change, increase their resilience and improve their livelihoods. It operates in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Brazil, Honduras, and Guatemala.

“I am grateful for being able to contribute to the meaningful work of c&c as Chair. This partnership offers great opportunities as we can pool our strengths and experience in the sector. Of course, it also comes with challenges, but I look forward to taking them on,” says Kathrine Löfberg, also Chair of the family-owned coffee group Löfbergs.

“We are happy that Kathrine Löfberg has accepted the mandate. This gives the initiative continuity and keeps it on track. We are very much looking forward to working together and wish her a good start in this important position,” says Stefan Ruge, c&c Program Manager.

c&c was founded and is run by the shareholders of International Coffee Partners (ICP) which are Delta Cafés (Portugal), Franck (Croatia), Joh. Johannson (Norway), Lavazza (Italy), Löfbergs (Sweden), Neumann Gruppe (Germany), Paulig (Finland), and Tchibo (Germany). Associate members are Tim Hortons (Canada), Walter Matter (Switzerland), and J.M. Smucker (USA). The initiative works in cooperation with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and with Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung (HRNS) as coordinating and implementing partner.

About the initiative for coffee&climate
The initiative for coffee&climate (c&c) is a pre-competitive partnership of private and public actors. Together they strive to support smallholder coffee farming families and their communities to effectively respond to climate change, increase their resilience and improve their livelihoods. Since its founding in 2010, c&c has been working in seven regions worldwide: Following a five-step participatory and inclusive approach, smallholder families get access to practical tools and knowledge, allowing them to adapt their farms to climate change, minimize carbon emissions and enhance the carbon storage potential in coffee landscapes. With more than 92,000 coffee farming households supported to date, c&c is currently in its third phase of implementation and will reach an additional 80,000 families by 2024.

One year of rescued coffee beans – how has it gone?

The sustainability project Rescued Coffee began a year ago, a cooperation between Circle K and Löfbergs with the purpose to minimize unnecessary waste of coffee beans. Four batches of Rescued Coffee has been launched during the year, which means that 26 tons of coffee that risked being wasted has been drunk up instead.

"I look forward to continue to develop Löfbergs’s sustainability work together with the rest of the organisation and the world around us,” Kajsa-Lisa Ljudén says.

Löfbergs Group in the forefront to disrupt the classic coffee industry with a new, global initiative that gives hope to the world's coffee farmers

A transparent coffee industry for the benefit of the farmers who grow the coffee. That is the ambition of Era of We, a new digital platform that gives coffee farmers the opportunity to set prices and create their own brands, and everyone can participate. In 2021, Löfbergs Group joined Era of We as the first roaster, launching the platform in Sweden. Now the turn has come to Denmark.

Kajsa-Lisa Ljudén, Sustainability Strategist at Löfbergs, tells more about the coffee roastery's framework for sustainable business.

A sustainable business framework

Löfbergs are determined to be in the forefront and contribute to a sustainable future. The starting point is to minimise the negative effect and maximise the positive. The perspective has always been to build for coming generations.

Together for a fair growth

A fair growth on commercial conditions, where fundamental human rights are respected, is a prerequisite for sustainable development. To secure the supply of coffee for tomorrow, Löfbergs are working together with a number of players to improve the coffee farmers’ living conditions, development possibilities, and ability to adapt to the effects of climate change.

Co-operation for a sustainable future

Co-operation for a sustainable future

A sustainable development requires co-operation. We also get better by learning from others. At Löfbergs, we are engaged in a number of networks and initiatives to influence the social development and share knowledge and experience regarding sustainability with others.

”It's time for a new era of coffee. Not least for the coffee farmers. We hope that together we can work towards creating the framework for a responsible and sustainable coffee trade, ” says Malin Helgman and Lars Aaen Thøgersen at Löfbergs Group.

"Digitization is crucial for the quality coffee of the future"

"Era of We thus gives the coffee farmers a voice and enables them to differentiate themselves with independent brands. That way, they are also empowered to set the price of their products themselves. It fundamentally changes the rules of the game."
