Löfbergs and Swedish government agency in a joint initiative

Many coffee farmers around the world are adversely affected by the climate changes - with poorer living conditions as a cause. Now, Sida (a government agency working on behalf of the Swedish parliament and government, with the mission to reduce poverty in the world) is taking joint action together with Löfbergs and eight other family-owned European coffee companies and one from Canada. In a common development project, they want to improve the possibilities for small-scale coffee farmers to meet the climate changes and at the same time increase their income.

- The climate matter is central for the work with poverty reduction, and all good influences are needed. This is a great example of when the aid and the industry together can contribute from each mission to an important development project. In this way, the world's poor can get more development for the money, says Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, director general at Sida.

- The climate changes have hit many coffee farmers. By working together with Sida, the possibilities for us to contribute to a sustainable and financial development that benefits small-scale coffee farmers all over the world have increased, says Kathrine Löfbergs, director of communications at Löfbergs.

Help them help themselves
The project, called Coffee & Climate, involves coffee farmers in Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Tanzania and Vietnam. The idea is to combine climate research and practical experience to develop a globally useful toolbox that can help coffee farmers to adjust to the climate changes.

- It is about making it easy for more exposed coffee farmers to change over to more sustainable cultivation methods. We have already seen examples that it leads to an increase in production and quality, that the coffee farmers get more money and that the standard of living has increased, says Kathrine Löfberg.
